Introduction

Over three million people in the UK and an estimated one billion people worldwide are affected by neurological disorders, according to the World Health Organization (WHO) (WHO, 2006). Neurological disorders are diseases of the central and peripheral nervous system: the brain, spinal cord, cranial nerves, peripheral nerves, nerve roots, autonomic nervous system, neuromuscular junction, and muscles. These disorders include epilepsy, Alzheimer’s disease (and other dementias), cerebrovascular diseases (including stroke), migraine, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, neuroinfections, brain tumours, traumatic disorders of the nervous system such as (traumatic brain injury), and neurological disorders as a result of malnutrition (WHO 2014). The term ‘long term neurological condition’ (LTNC) is used to classify any of this diverse group of neurological conditions, which result from injury or disease, that will affect an individual for the rest of their lives (Royal College of Physicians, 2008).
